Stock market holidays 2026–27: when stocks and bonds close

Every NYSE holiday and 1 pm early close for 2026–28, with SIFMA bond closes side by side, times in ET and UTC, and why Veterans Day differs.

US stocks are open on Veterans Day, Wed, Nov 11, 2026, but the over-the-counter bond market and the Federal Reserve Banks are closed. That one day shows why "is the market open?" has more than one answer: the stock exchanges, the bond market and the Fed each keep their own holiday calendar. This guide sets the three side by side for the rest of 2026 and for 2027, adds the stock market holidays NYSE has already published for 2028, and gives every time in Eastern Time (ET) and in UTC.

The short version: NYSE and Nasdaq close on 10 holidays a year (9 in 2028) and close early, at 1:00 pm ET, on a few days around Thanksgiving, Christmas and July 4. The bond market follows recommendations from SIFMA, the securities industry's trade association. It also closes on Columbus Day and Veterans Day, and it closes early, usually at 2:00 pm ET, on several days around holidays, such as the Friday after Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve.

Next closures: Veterans Day to New Year's Day

Last checked: Mon, Oct 26, 2026, against the NYSE, Nasdaq, SIFMA and Federal Reserve calendars linked on this page. Exchanges can add a closure at short notice, for example for a national day of mourning, and SIFMA's dates are recommendations that can change, so this page is refreshed when a calendar changes. On a market holiday, our stock pages show the last session's closing price and its date.

Stock market holidays 2026, 2027 and 2028

NYSE has published its holidays through 2028, and it says all NYSE markets, its options exchanges included, observe them (NYSE). Nasdaq's 2026 schedule lists the same closures and the same 1:00 pm early closes (Nasdaq Trader); Nasdaq has not yet posted its 2027 schedule.

Early closes. On these days stocks close at 1:00 pm ET, eligible options at 1:15 pm, and the late trading sessions of NYSE American, NYSE Arca, NYSE National and NYSE Texas at 5:00 pm instead of 8:00 pm:

  • 2026: Fri, Nov 27 and Thu, Dec 24.
  • 2027: Fri, Nov 26 only. Christmas Eve is the observed Christmas holiday that year, so there is no early close around it, and NYSE lists none before July 4 either.
  • 2028: Mon, Jul 3 and Fri, Nov 24.

Columbus Day and Veterans Day are normal trading days for stocks in all three years.

Bond market holidays 2026 and 2027

SIFMA's recommendations cover the trading of US-dollar bonds: Treasuries, mortgage- and asset-backed securities, over-the-counter corporate and municipal bonds, and secondary money-market trading. They are not rules. SIFMA says they are "recommendations only; each member firm should decide for itself whether its fixed income departments remain open for trading", that they can change with market conditions, and that early closes don't move the closing time for settlements (SIFMA, Dec 17, 2025).

Full closes recommended by SIFMA:

Early closes at 2:00 pm ET recommended by SIFMA:

  • 2026: Fri, May 22; Thu, Jul 2; Fri, Nov 27; Thu, Dec 24; Thu, Dec 31. Good Friday, Apr 3, was a 12:00 pm close.
  • 2027 (confirm on sifma.org): Thu, Mar 25; Fri, May 28; Fri, Jul 2; Fri, Nov 26; Thu, Dec 23; Fri, Dec 31.

The 2026 dates are SIFMA's 2026 schedule as of Oct 26, 2026. The 2027 dates follow the 2027 recommendations SIFMA issued at the same time; SIFMA confirms each recommendation again shortly before the date, so check sifma.org before relying on a 2027 bond date. SIFMA has not issued recommendations for 2028, so this page shows none.

SIFMA's schedule is for the over-the-counter bond market. NYSE's own exchange-listed bond platform, NYSE Bonds, follows the NYSE calendar above.

Is the stock market open on Veterans Day and Columbus Day?

Yes. On Veterans Day, Wed, Nov 11, 2026, NYSE and Nasdaq trade their normal session, 9:30 am–4:00 pm ET (14:30–21:00 UTC). Neither Veterans Day nor Columbus Day is an NYSE holiday in 2026, 2027 or 2028.

What does close on both days:

  • The bond market. SIFMA recommends a full close on Columbus Day and Veterans Day, so on Nov 11 stocks trade while SIFMA recommends that bond trading stop for the day.
  • The Federal Reserve Banks. Both are on the Fed's holiday schedule (Federal Reserve Financial Services).

The next dates: Columbus Day is Mon, Oct 11, 2027, and Veterans Day is Thu, Nov 11, 2027. Stocks trade a full session on both; SIFMA's 2027 recommendations show a bond close on both.

Is the stock market open on Thanksgiving and Black Friday?

The stock market is closed on Thanksgiving, Thu, Nov 26, 2026, and open for a short session on Black Friday, Nov 27: 9:30 am–1:00 pm ET (14:30–18:00 UTC). Eligible options trade until 1:15 pm ET (18:15 UTC), and SIFMA recommends a 2:00 pm ET (19:00 UTC) close for bonds. The late trading sessions at NYSE American, NYSE Arca, NYSE National and NYSE Texas end at 5:00 pm ET.

The pattern repeats each year:

  • 2027: closed Thu, Nov 25; early close Fri, Nov 26.
  • 2028: closed Thu, Nov 23; early close Fri, Nov 24.

Is the stock market open on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve?

In 2026: on Christmas Eve, Thu, Dec 24, stocks close early at 1:00 pm ET (18:00 UTC). New Year's Eve, Thu, Dec 31, is a full session to 4:00 pm ET (21:00 UTC). The bond market closes at 2:00 pm ET on both days, according to SIFMA's recommendations. Christmas Day and New Year's Day, both Fridays, are full closures for stocks and bonds.

In 2027: Christmas falls on a Saturday, so the market takes the holiday on Fri, Dec 24, and there is no Christmas Eve early close for stocks. Thu, Dec 23 is a full stock session, while SIFMA's recommendations show a 2:00 pm bond close that day. New Year's Eve, Fri, Dec 31, 2027, is a full stock session, and no New Year's holiday follows it (see below). Bonds close at 2:00 pm ET that day.

In 2028: Christmas Day is Mon, Dec 25, and NYSE lists no early close before it.

Is the stock market open on Good Friday?

No. Good Friday is an NYSE holiday every year, although it is not on the Federal Reserve's holiday schedule. The next dates are Fri, Mar 26, 2027 and Fri, Apr 14, 2028.

The bond market differs from year to year. In 2026, SIFMA recommended an early close at 12:00 pm ET on Good Friday, Apr 3, rather than a full close. For 2027, its recommendations show a full close on Fri, Mar 26 and a 2:00 pm ET close on Thu, Mar 25. US clocks will already have moved to daylight time by then, so that 2:00 pm close is 18:00 UTC.

Why is there no New Year's Day market holiday in 2028?

Because Jan 1, 2028 is a Saturday, and NYSE's rule for weekend holidays has an exception for the end of the year. NYSE's calendar says it plainly: "no New Year's Day holiday is observed."

Normally a holiday that falls on a Saturday closes the market on the Friday before. NYSE's holiday rule, Rule 7.2, makes an exception "if unusual business conditions exist, such as the ending of a monthly or yearly accounting period", as NYSE's 2021 filing to amend the rule puts it (Federal Register). Dec 31 ends a month, a quarter and a year, so Fri, Dec 31, 2027 is a full trading day, and so is Mon, Jan 3, 2028. That is why 2028 has nine stock market holidays instead of ten.

It has happened before. New Year's Day 2022 also fell on a Saturday, and the market traded a full session on Dec 31, 2021, as Bloomberg reported at the time (via BusinessWorld).

What happens when a holiday falls on a weekend?

A holiday on a Saturday closes the stock market on the Friday before, and a holiday on a Sunday closes it on the Monday after, under NYSE Rule 7.2 (Federal Register). New Year's Day is the exception explained above. In 2027 three holidays move:

Holiday Falls on Markets closed (stocks; SIFMA bonds) Federal Reserve Banks
Juneteenth Sat, Jun 19, 2027 Fri, Jun 18 Open Fri, Jun 18
Independence Day Sun, Jul 4, 2027 Mon, Jul 5 Closed Mon, Jul 5
Christmas Day Sat, Dec 25, 2027 Fri, Dec 24 Open Fri, Dec 24

Sources: NYSE, SIFMA 2027 recommendations, Federal Reserve Financial Services.

The Fed handles Saturday holidays differently: "For holidays falling on Saturday, Federal Reserve Banks and Branches will be open the preceding Friday." So on Fri, Jun 18 and Fri, Dec 24, 2027, the stock and bond markets are closed while the Fed Banks are open. For a Sunday holiday, all three close on the Monday.

Market hours and early closes in UTC

The regular stock market session is 9:30 am to 4:00 pm ET all year. In UTC it moves by an hour twice a year, because New York switches between Eastern Daylight Time (UTC−4) and Eastern Standard Time (UTC−5). US clocks change at 2:00 am local time on the second Sunday of March and the first Sunday of November (NIST).

Trading days New York time Regular session in UTC

Clock changes on Sun, Nov 1, 2026, Sun, Mar 14, 2027 and Sun, Nov 7, 2027, from the NIST rule.

Early closes in UTC:

  • Fri, Nov 27 and Thu, Dec 24, 2026; Fri, Nov 26, 2027; Fri, Nov 24, 2028 (all in winter time): stocks 18:00 UTC, eligible options 18:15 UTC. On the 2026 and 2027 dates, SIFMA's 2:00 pm bond close is 19:00 UTC.
  • Mon, Jul 3, 2028 (summer time): stocks 17:00 UTC, eligible options 17:15 UTC.

For readers in the UK and Europe: the gap to New York is not always five hours. UK clocks go back on Sun, Oct 25, 2026 and forward on Sun, Mar 28, 2027 (GOV.UK), a week or two away from the US dates. In the week of Oct 26, 2026, and again from Mar 15 to Mar 25, 2027, the 9:30 am New York open is 1:30 pm in London instead of the usual 2:30 pm.

How many trading days are in a year?

There are 251 trading days in each of 2026, 2027 and 2028, by our count from the NYSE calendar: the weekdays in the year minus the holidays that fall on weekdays. That is 261 − 10 in 2026, 261 − 10 in 2027 and 260 − 9 in 2028. Early-close days count as trading days.

Futures and crypto markets follow their own schedules, which this guide doesn't cover. More explainers like this one are in Guides.
