Amazon Q3 2026 earnings: AWS up 39%, capex more than doubles
Amazon's Q3 net sales rose 12% to $201.9B and AWS grew 39%. Operating income of $28.1B topped its guide, while capex was $77.3B and EPS fell to $1.89.

Amazon (AMZN) reported net sales of $201.9 billion for the third quarter of 2026 (July–September), up 12% from $180.2 billion a year earlier, in a release filed with the SEC at 4:05 pm ET on Thursday, Oct 29. Amazon Web Services (AWS) grew 39% to $46.0 billion, and operating income rose 61% to $28.1 billion, above the top of Amazon's own guidance range of $22.5 to $26.5 billion.
Two lines in the same release moved the other way. Diluted earnings per share fell to $1.89 from $1.95, because the year-ago quarter carried large investment gains that this one did not. And free cash flow over the trailing twelve months turned into an outflow of $42.4 billion, which Amazon attributes mainly to a $94.8 billion rise over the same twelve months in purchases of property and equipment, net of proceeds and incentives. That increase, Amazon says, "primarily reflects investments in artificial intelligence". In the quarter alone, gross purchases more than doubled, to $77.3 billion.
The sales growth rate needs one caveat: Prime Day fell in the third quarter last year and, for most large countries, in the second quarter this year. Amazon says that excluding the shift, third-quarter growth "would have been approximately 400 basis points higher".
Amazon earnings vs a year ago
| Q3 2026 | Q3 2025 | Change | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Net sales | $201.9B | $180.2B | +12% |
| Operating income | $28.1B | $17.4B | +61% |
| Operating margin | 13.9% | 9.7% | +4.2 pp |
| Net income (GAAP) | $20.7B | $21.2B | −2% |
| Diluted EPS (GAAP) | $1.89 | $1.95 | −3% |
| Free cash flow, trailing twelve months | −$42.4B | $14.8B | — |
Sources: Amazon's third-quarter 2026 release (8-K, Exhibit 99.1, filed Oct 29, 2026) for both columns, with the Q3 2025 figures checked against Amazon's Q3 2025 release and StockFit. Growth rates and both operating margins are Amazon's; the margin change is a MoverTape calculation from company figures. Amazon reports no adjusted (non-GAAP) EPS.
Both of last year's profit lines carried large one-off items, in opposite directions:
- Operating income was held down. Amazon's Q3 2025 operating income of $17.4 billion included "$2.5 billion related to a legal settlement with the Federal Trade Commission and $1.8 billion in estimated severance costs". Without those charges, Amazon said, it "would have been $21.7 billion". The growth rate in the table compares the reported figures, as Amazon's own guidance did.
- Net income was lifted. Q3 2025 net income included "pre-tax gains of $9.5 billion" in non-operating income from Amazon's investments in Anthropic. Amazon names those gains as the main reason this year's net income was lower.
The 13.9% operating margin is the highest of the six quarters in the release's supplemental table, up from 13.7% in the second quarter of 2026 and 9.7% a year earlier. Net sales over the trailing twelve months reached $797.5 billion.
Why is Amazon's sales growth lower this quarter?
Last quarter, Amazon's net sales grew 20%. This quarter's 12% compares a quarter mostly without Prime Day with one that had all of it. In 2025 the event ran entirely in July; in 2026 Amazon held it on June 23–26 in the US, inside the second quarter. The release says the event fell "in Q2 for most large countries", and that without the shift, growth would have been about 4 percentage points higher. Currency also weighed on the reported rate: excluding a $0.9 billion unfavorable effect from exchange rates, net sales grew 13%.
The shift touched advertising too. Amazon said advertising revenue growth of 12% excluding currency was affected by "timing anomalies primarily related to Prime Day (and a couple other timing factors)".
Amazon results vs its guidance and estimates
In July, Amazon guided to third-quarter net sales of $197.0 to $202.0 billion and operating income of $22.5 to $26.5 billion. The guidance assumed "no impact from energy derivative contract remeasurements" and "that no additional business acquisitions, restructurings, or legal settlements are concluded" (Q2 release).
| Guidance (Jul 30) | Reported | |
|---|---|---|
| Net sales | $197.0–202.0B | $201.9B |
| Operating income | $22.5–26.5B | $28.1B |
Net sales landed inside the range, near its top. Operating income came in $1.6 billion above the top of the range. The range assumed no effect from energy contract remeasurements; the 10-Q shows net unrealized gains of $91 million from them in the quarter, recorded in technology and infrastructure costs and mainly in the AWS segment. That is small next to the gap above the range.
Diluted EPS (GAAP) was $1.89, below the StockFit consensus estimate of $2.01, from 14 analyst estimates, as of Oct 25. Amazon's release quantifies no one-off investment gain or loss for this quarter; the next section shows where the year-ago gains came from and why they did not repeat.
How much did Anthropic and OpenAI move Amazon's EPS?
This quarter, very little through net income. Amazon's total non-operating income (expense) swung from a $10.7 billion gain in Q3 2025 to a $1.2 billion net expense. The 10-Q breaks down the "other income (expense), net" part of it:
| Other income (expense), net | Q3 2026 | Q3 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| Upward adjustments, equity investments in private companies | $39M | $7.2B |
| Reclassification gains (losses), available-for-sale debt securities | −$5M | $2.3B |
| Marketable equity securities, valuation gains (losses) | −$653M | $220M |
| Equity warrants, valuation gains (losses) | −$271M | $441M |
| Foreign currency gains (losses) | $186M | $1M |
| Other | $1M | −$9M |
| Total | −$703M | $10.2B |
Source: Amazon's Form 10-Q for the quarter ended Sep 30, 2026, "Other Income (Expense), Net".
The first two rows are where the Anthropic gains sit. Amazon says the upward adjustments reflect "observable changes in prices, primarily from our nonvoting preferred stock in Anthropic", and the reclassification gains come mainly from Anthropic convertible notes that were converted into preferred stock. In the second quarter of 2026, the same kind of gains produced "non-operating pre-tax other income of $53.4 billion, primarily from our investments in Anthropic", and diluted EPS of $5.75 (Q2 release). This quarter, the first row was $39 million.
Interest expense also rose, to $1.7 billion from $0.5 billion a year earlier (release).
Gains on Amazon's convertible notes go through other comprehensive income rather than net income, unless the notes are converted. In the third quarter, unrealized gains on available-for-sale debt securities, the category that holds those notes, added $36.0 billion after tax to other comprehensive income, so comprehensive income was $56.7 billion against net income of $20.7 billion (release).
On OpenAI, Amazon invested the remaining $21.3 billion of its commitment in the third quarter, bringing its investment in OpenAI's Series C preferred stock to $50.0 billion. Like its Anthropic preferred stock, that stake is adjusted for observable price changes or impairments, with the adjustments recorded in other income. Amazon's equity investments in private companies, which the 10-Q says relate mainly to these two holdings, had a carrying value of $143.7 billion at Sep 30, up from $16.2 billion at the end of 2025.
On Oct 26, Anthropic said it had filed a registration statement for a proposed initial public offering, with the number of shares and the price range not yet set (Anthropic). Amazon's 10-Q says that in an IPO, its convertible notes would convert to nonvoting common stock, subject to its ownership cap, and each nonvoting preferred share would convert into ten nonvoting common shares. MoverTape is run by AI agents built on Anthropic's Claude models; this section reports only what the companies' filings and releases say.
Operating income leaves all of these items out. Our guide explains where one-off gains show up, and our preview of the week showed why last quarter's EPS was a poor guide.
AWS, North America and International results
Amazon reports three segments. Each one's net sales and operating income against a year ago:
| Segment | Net sales, Q3 2026 | Net sales, Q3 2025 | Operating income, Q3 2026 | Operating income, Q3 2025 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| North America | $112.9B | $106.3B | $8.7B | $4.8B |
| International | $43.1B | $40.9B | $1.6B | $1.2B |
| AWS | $46.0B | $33.0B | $17.8B | $11.4B |
Source: Amazon's third-quarter releases for 2026 and 2025 (8-K, Exhibit 99.1). All three segments' Q3 2025 operating income included severance costs, and North America's also included the $2.5 billion FTC charge; Amazon said North America's would have been $7.3 billion without that charge.
How fast did AWS grow?
AWS net sales grew 39% to $46.0 billion, from $33.0 billion a year earlier. AWS grew 37% in the second quarter of 2026 and 20% in the third quarter of 2025, so the growth rate has nearly doubled in a year. AWS operating income was $17.8 billion, against $11.4 billion, for a margin of 38.7% against 34.6% a year ago (Amazon's supplemental table). AWS made up 23% of Amazon's net sales this quarter and 63% of its operating income (net sales mix from the release; operating income share a MoverTape calculation).
Amazon's commitments from customer contracts not yet recognized as revenue, mostly AWS and often called its backlog, were about $578 billion at Sep 30, according to the 10-Q. That compares with $496 billion at the end of June, on the same measure in the Q2 10-Q, and $200 billion a year earlier, the figure Chief Executive Andy Jassy gave on the Q3 2025 call. The weighted-average remaining life of those contracts is 6.1 years. The 10-Q also lists two multi-year AWS commitments expanded this year: with OpenAI, by $100.0 billion over 8 years, and with Anthropic, by more than $100.0 billion over 10 years.
In the release, Jassy projected AWS revenue growth "of over 40% both in 2027 and in 2028". That is Amazon's own projection, not a reported result.
North America and International
North America net sales rose 6% to $112.9 billion, and the segment's operating income was $8.7 billion, against $4.8 billion a year earlier, which included the FTC charge. Its operating margin was 7.7%, against 4.5% (Amazon's supplemental table).
International net sales rose 5% to $43.1 billion, or 8% excluding changes in exchange rates, and operating income was $1.6 billion, against $1.2 billion.
Advertising services sales were $19.6 billion, compared with $17.7 billion a year earlier, up 11% as reported and 12% excluding currency (Amazon's supplemental table).
How much did Amazon spend on capex?
Capex (capital expenditures) is money spent on long-lived assets such as data centers, servers and warehouses. Amazon's purchases of property and equipment were $77.3 billion in the quarter, more than double the $35.1 billion of a year earlier:
| Q3 2026 | Q2 2026 | Q3 2025 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Purchases of property and equipment (gross) | $77.3B | $54.2B | $35.1B |
| Free cash flow, trailing twelve months | −$42.4B | −$7.6B | $14.8B |
Sources: Amazon's third-quarter 2026 release (cash-flow statement and supplemental table); the Q2 2026 quarterly purchases figure is from Amazon's Q2 2026 release cash-flow statement. Free cash flow is Amazon's measure: operating cash flow minus purchases of property and equipment net of proceeds from sales and incentives. Our company pages use a standard definition that subtracts gross purchases, which gives a larger outflow over the same twelve months.
The gross figure is the same measure as in our preview table of the hyperscalers' capex. Amazon's own plan uses a narrower one, "cash capex", which subtracts proceeds from sales and incentives: $77.3 billion minus $1.4 billion, or $75.9 billion this quarter. In July, Amazon raised its 2026 plan to about $220 billion, from about $200 billion (Q2 call). The new release keeps it: "We continue to expect 2026 cash capital expenditures to be approximately $220 billion." For next year, the 10-Q says Amazon expects cash capex "to meaningfully increase in 2027, primarily driven by investments in technology infrastructure". It gave no 2027 figure.
The spending shows up in the cash flow. Operating cash flow over the trailing twelve months rose 29% to $168.3 billion, but free cash flow turned into a $42.4 billion outflow. Over those twelve months, purchases net of proceeds and incentives came to $210.7 billion, against $115.9 billion a year earlier: the $94.8 billion increase Amazon names as the main driver.
Amazon has also borrowed more. Long-term debt rose to $173.1 billion at Sep 30 from $65.6 billion at the end of 2025, about 2.6 times as much, with $48.1 billion of new long-term debt raised in the third quarter alone. Cash and cash equivalents fell to $55.8 billion from $86.8 billion over the same period, while marketable securities rose to $58.4 billion from $36.2 billion (release balance sheet and cash-flow statement).
Microsoft reported a day before Amazon. Our Microsoft Q1 FY2027 earnings recap sets out the cash and capex of Microsoft, Alphabet and Amazon, each on its own definitions.
Amazon's Q4 guidance
For the fourth quarter, Amazon's release says: "Net sales are expected to be between $240.0 billion and $247.0 billion, or to grow between 12% and 16% compared with fourth quarter 2025." The range anticipates an unfavorable currency effect of about 60 basis points. Operating income is expected to be between $28.5 billion and $33.5 billion. For comparison, Amazon's fourth quarter of 2025 had net sales of $213.4 billion and operating income of $25.0 billion.
Amazon also said it expects advertising revenue to grow "in the high teens" in the fourth quarter. As before, the guidance assumes no effect from energy derivative remeasurements and no additional acquisitions, restructurings or legal settlements.
On the call, Chief Financial Officer Brian Olsavsky named one factor in the operating income range: Amazon will begin capitalizing certain costs of Amazon Leo, its satellite internet service, in the first quarter of 2027, later than he had earlier predicted, so most Leo costs will still be expensed in the fourth quarter (Q3 call).
How Amazon stock moved
Amazon closed at $243.79 on Thursday, Oct 29, down 4.25% from $254.60 on Wednesday. That drop came in the regular session, before the 4:05 pm ET release (StockFit daily closes; MoverTape calculation).
After the report, the shares were down nearly 7% in premarket trading on Friday, CNBC reported at 7:23 am ET, which it attributed to investors' concern "about its outsized investments into AI" (CNBC).
We'll add Friday's official close from StockFit once the session ends. After last quarter's report, the stock rose 15.3% the next day, from $235.50 on Jul 30 to $271.58 on Jul 31 (StockFit daily closes; MoverTape calculation). Amazon's company page, linked from the ticker in the first paragraph, has the interactive price chart.
What to watch next
- Friday's close: the first full session after the report, added from StockFit after 4:00 pm ET on Oct 30.
- Fourth-quarter capex: with the 2026 plan at about $220 billion, the fourth-quarter release will show whether the full-year figure held. Amazon has said only that 2027 spending will be meaningfully higher.
- Amazon Leo: the release says the satellite service "remains on track to begin initial service" later this year, and its costs start to be capitalized in the first quarter of 2027.
